The rain came first. Soft, patient taps against the glass walls of the thirty-second floor. The city blurred into silver streaks as the storm rolled in.

Emma Turner shut her laptop and sighed. Everyone else had gone home hours ago, except the man whose office still glowed behind the frosted glass—Adrian Cole, CEO of Cole Industries, her boss for exactly one year and the reason her pulse had a permanent sprint button.
